Homeowner Fills Garden with Sand to Save Mowing
In recent bizarre news, reports have revealed that a 66-year-old resident from Kansas City in the US got so fed up with mowing and watering her lawn that she decided to fill her entire garden with 80 tonnes of sand.
Georgianna Reid hired contractors to fill her garden, explaining that at her age she was tired of dealing with her lawn.
“Now being over 60, I’ve decided that I’ve owned the house for 33 years and that I wasn’t going to mow anymore or water,”
The conversion cost $4,000 (around £2,390) to complete, but her neighbours were less than welcoming to the ‘sandbox’ with some even filing complaints to city officials.
Neighbour Edwin Bisby stated:
“I think the house looks revolting with all that is out there” “I’m sure it’s going to hurt the property values in this neighbourhood”
Despite neighbours concerns, inspectors found no code violations as the sand had been used for landscaping purposes.
The suburban garden, which has given a whole new meaning to the name ‘beach house’, has been decorated with a volleyball net, deck chairs and various lawn ornaments to encourage local children to come and play.
It’s unsurprising that Mrs Reid took the decision to get rid of her lawn, as recent research has revealed that Brits spend a massive 19.2 hours a year mowing their lawns. For the retired and older generation there comes a time when this is simply not practical, and mowing the lawn can become difficult, if not impossible.
There are many ways in which gardening can be made simple for the older generation, which don’t include the use of 80 tonnes of sand!
Installing artificial grass means that problems such as cutting, watering and maintaining a lawn all become extinct whilst offering the convenience of being able to step out and enjoy your garden 365 days a year come rain or shine.
