Gardening Trends for 2015
What’s on the horizon for gardeners in the coming year? Here we look at 5 top trends that are going to be changing the way we garden in 2015.
1. Portable gardening
Portable gardening is on the rise. As renting rises and new build properties get smaller, most homeowners are reluctant to take on the maintenance of a garden or simply don’t have one. For this reason many people are expected to look for alternative ways to enjoy the benefits of gardening without the need for vast amounts of land. Container plants, hanging baskets, and artificial grass, all of which can be easily transported, are getting the thumbs up from the modern gardener.
2. Pesticide use
Reports show that pesticide use rose in 2014 compared to 2013, and it looks like the trend is only going to continue in 2015. It’s important to point out that chemical pesticides and fertilisers contribute to a whole host of environmental issues – polluting our water, air and even harming human health. If you’d prefer to go chemical free simply replace natural grass with low maintenance artificial turf.
While 2014 was the year of the poppy, 2015 is set to be the year of the sunflower. Fleuroselect, an international organisation for the ornamental plants industry, is going to be campaigning to promote the plant to home gardeners this year.
4. Outdoor entertaining
After 2014 was confirmed as of the warmest years on record, it’s estimated that more people than ever will be using their gardens as an extension of their homes when entertaining this year. A well-maintained garden is probably the most important element of outdoor entertaining but if your garden is in a bad and you don’t have the time or means to recultivate an entire lawn then consider laying artificial grass.
5. Green living
Sustainable, eco-friendly gardening is going to be an essential trend of 2015. Eco-conscious gardeners are set to plant rain gardens, install water butts, and utilise solar powered garden lights to show their green side.
